LANSING — The United Auto Workers is making its move in Michigan’s 2026 statewide elections, announcing major endorsements in what the union is calling a critical year for defending workers’ rights and democracy.

Following a decision by the member-elected board of the UAW’s Community Action Program, the union is backing Karen McDonald for Michigan attorney general and Garlin Gilchrist for secretary of state.

UAW leadership says these endorsements were earned through direct questioning and evaluation by rank-and-file members, not handed out along party lines. The union is framing the races as frontline defenses against attacks on labor rights and voting access, with Michigan once again a national testing ground.

Union representatives pointed to McDonald’s working-class background and history with organized labor, while citing Gilchrist’s record of alignment with union priorities and election protections.

The UAW says the stakes are clear: who enforces labor law, and who protects the ballot, will shape Michigan’s future for working families.
