The U.S. Department of Labor announced Jan. 30 that its Employee Benefits Security Administration recovered more than one-point-four billion dollars for workers, families, and benefit plans during fiscal year 2025.
According to the department, more than half of those recoveries came from enforcement actions involving retirement, health, and welfare benefit plans.
The agency reported the funds were returned through a combination of investigations, compliance assistance, voluntary correction programs, abandoned plan recoveries, and informal complaint resolutions handled by benefits advisors.
The administration also cited additional outcomes, including the removal of improper benefit plan provisions, improved fiduciary oversight, and expanded access to mental health and substance use disorder benefits.
The Employee Benefits Security Administration oversees protections for more than 156 million workers, retirees, and family members covered by millions of private-sector health and retirement plans that hold nearly $14 trillion in assets.
Employers and workers seeking assistance with job-based benefit plans can contact EBSA through the Department of Labor.
