Get up to date on the Big Bullsh*t Bill here.
WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats flooded the floor with amendments in a last-ditch effort to slow or derail the One Big Beautiful Bill—a sweeping reconciliation package that, despite its title, mostly delivered tax breaks for the wealthy and pain for everyone else.
The bill, passed by the House in May, had become the centerpiece of Republican legislative strategy. On June 29, Democrats escalated their opposition, filing amendment after amendment aimed at protecting Medicaid, food assistance, rural hospitals, and affordable broadband. They also attempted to block tax breaks for billionaires that critics said were less about economic growth and more about funding yacht upgrades.
Senate Republicans pushed forward, brushing off amendments as political theater and standing firm on their claims that the bill would bring “historic middle-class tax relief.” Meanwhile, Democrats attempted to tack on protections for student borrowers, workers, veterans, and clean energy jobs, many of which Republicans either rejected outright or buried under procedural votes.
The vote-a-rama marathon continued through Saturday, with more amendments expected to pile up as the Senate worked toward a final vote by July 4.
If the bill cleared the Senate, it would return to the House, where conservative hardliners had signaled they still wanted deeper cuts. President Trump continued to demand fast passage, warning of financial doom if his signature tax package stalled.
