WASHINGTON — House Democrats criticized President Donald Trump’s recent airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, claiming the military action served as a political distraction from domestic issues, including proposed Medicaid cuts and the gutting of key federal agencies.
Speaking on the House floor Friday, Representative Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania accused the Trump administration of using the successful airstrike to shift focus away from critical policy failures at home. Dean cited the administration’s plans to slash Medicaid, cut funding to addiction services, and dismantle support for agencies like USAID and the National Institutes of Health.
While Dean acknowledged the precision and effectiveness of the military operation, she urged her colleagues not to lose sight of what she described as the administration’s harmful domestic agenda. She argued that issues such as veteran care, the Ukraine conflict, and humanitarian aid funding have been sidelined in favor of headline-grabbing military actions.
House Democrats pointed to the administration’s delay in restoring emergency food aid and accused officials of neglecting pressing public health and social service needs while focusing on foreign military engagements.
Dean called on her colleagues to resist what she described as the administration’s tactic of using international conflicts to obscure domestic policy cuts. She emphasized that the well-being of millions of Americans, particularly those relying on Medicaid and mental health services, remains under threat.
The remarks highlight growing tensions over Trump’s handling of both foreign and domestic priorities, as Democrats warn that military actions are being used to divert attention from unpopular policy changes at home.
