NEW YORK (Dec. 8, 2024) – The brazen assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan has sent shockwaves through corporate America and sparked a wave of public discourse. As police continue their nationwide manhunt for the masked gunman, the incident has become a flashpoint for frustration with the U.S. healthcare system. Targeting one of the most visible figures in the industry, this act has underscored public anger over systemic inequities, resonating with millions who feel betrayed by a system meant to safeguard their well-being.

Green with Similarities

For The Bull Moose Network, the shocking act draws a striking comparison to Robin Hood, the storied outlaw who defied authority to challenge oppressive systems and redistribute wealth. In Robin Hood’s Progress to Nottingham, Robin’s actions are rooted in defiance against a rigged system. The ballad tells of Robin, dismissed and taunted by foresters (cops) as incapable of wielding a bow. He proves them wrong in dramatic fashion, striking the heart of a deer at a great distance. The captain of the guard, embarrassed, fires an arrow at Robin, who subsequently turns his wrath on the foresters who attack him. Much like Robin, whose extreme actions arose from humiliation and dismissal, the assassin’s violent act appears to be a response to perceived systemic failures.

Public perception of the assassin has eerily mirrored the romanticization of Robin Hood. While the violence itself has been condemned, its symbolic defiance resonates deeply. Robin’s escalation from self-defense to killing 14 foresters highlights the lengths to which individuals will go when denied fairness or dignity. Similarly, the healthcare system’s bureaucracy and denial of care – illustrated by millions of denied claims – have left countless Americans feeling powerless, feeling empathy for the assassin’s message, even if his methods are rejected.

Modern audiences often sanitize Robin Hood’s story, forgetting that his ballad origins were filled with bloodshed and unflinching rebellion. Just as Robin Hood’s slaughter of the foresters served as a statement against unjust laws that limited hunting to the aristocracy, the assassin’s act – though abhorrent – can be interpreted as a visceral outcry against a system that routinely prioritizes profits over people. The assassin’s symbolic defiance has struck a chord with those disillusioned by a healthcare industry viewed as exploitative and dehumanizing.

The enduring appeal of figures like Robin Hood lies in their willingness to challenge entrenched power structures, no matter the cost. Today’s healthcare crisis mirrors the inequities Robin fought against; a system where the powerful profit while ordinary people bear the burden. This parallel reinforces why the assassin’s actions, though extreme, have elicited surprising empathy from those who see themselves as victims of an unyielding system. Like the foresters in Robin Hood’s tale, the healthcare industry has become a focal point of frustration, making acts of defiance resonate with those who feel they have no other recourse.

A Broken System

The public reaction reveals deep-seated frustrations with private insurers. Data from the American Hospital Association shows that, on average, 18% of in-network insurance claims are denied, with some plans rejecting as many as 80%. For many, these statistics aren’t just abstract figures but lived realities leading to financial hardship and devastating health outcomes.

Stories of denied treatments, inaccessible medications, and mounting medical debt fuel the perception of a system rigged against ordinary Americans. Compounding this anger is the knowledge that healthcare executives earn multimillion-dollar compensation packages, further cementing the narrative of inequality and exploitation. The assassination, while tragic, underscores the human toll of these systemic failures, amplifying the call for reform.

History shows that systemic oppression often breeds rebellion. From medieval revolts to labor uprisings, acts of defiance arise from shared grievances against exploitation. Psychologists suggest that prolonged marginalization fosters collective frustration, which can escalate into radical actions.

The symbolic parallels between the UnitedHealthcare assassination and historic acts of rebellion reflect this pattern. As frustrations with the healthcare system grow, so does the willingness to sympathize with extreme actions that challenge the status quo. Just as Robin Hood symbolized resistance during inequity, today’s healthcare crisis has created an environment where defiance resonates deeply with the oppressed.

The Symbolism of the Act

For many, this assassination represents a manifestation of a collective frustration with healthcare inequities. The gunman reportedly left shell casings etched with words like “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” reflecting grievances against insurance practices. These terms mirror widespread perceptions of how insurers delay claims, deny coverage, and defend profit-driven actions at patients’ expense.

The deliberate messaging has turned the event into a rallying point, forcing a national reckoning on systemic failures. Social media has become a platform for sharing personal stories and debating solutions, renewing calls for Medicare for All as the only path toward meaningful reform.

Eliminating the for-profit insurance model could streamline access to care, reduce costs, and remove barriers that leave millions struggling to afford treatments. This transition is seen as both a moral imperative and a practical solution to a system prioritizing profits over patient outcomes.

The context of this violence underscores the urgency for reform. As John F. Kennedy observed, “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” While this act cannot be justified, it highlights the consequences of unaddressed systemic oppression and the need for meaningful change before frustrations escalate further.

The public’s frustration is deeply rooted in systemic failures, from denied care to rising costs. While this event is undeniably dark, it is a powerful reminder of the need for systemic restructuring. Medicare for All offers a path forward, ensuring every American has access to care without fear of financial ruin. This moment should transform collective frustration into action, paving the way for a more equitable and humane healthcare system.

This moment demands more than just outrage – it demands action. Do you have a healthcare nightmare? Share your story, amplify the voices calling for change, and join the fight for a healthcare system that prioritizes people over profits. Together, we can ensure this tragedy becomes the catalyst for the reform we so desperately need.
