WASHINTON — Senate Democrats continued their sharp opposition to the Republican-led One Big Beautiful Bill, or OBBB, calling it a sweeping package that would harm working families, gut healthcare programs, and reward the wealthy at the expense of everyday Americans.

Lawmakers argued the legislation, heavily backed by President Donald Trump, would slash Medicaid coverage for millions of Americans, including over 500,000 in Michigan alone. Senate Democrats warned the bill would also force rural hospitals to close, cut critical services, and drive up energy costs for working-class families.

Opposition senators said the bill’s promised tax cuts disproportionately benefit the ultra-rich and fail to offset devastating reductions to social safety nets. Provisions in the OBBB would roll back environmental protections, eliminate key support for addiction services, and reduce housing assistance.

The legislation’s backers claimed the bill would offer historic tax relief to the middle class and stimulate economic growth, but Democratic senators labeled the bill’s projected benefits as misleading and mathematically impossible.

Democrats warned that the proposed changes would dismantle Medicaid coverage for children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities, while simultaneously increasing out-of-pocket healthcare costs for millions.

The debate over the OBBB is expected to continue as the bill advances through Congress. Democrats vowed to fight the measure in its current form, framing it as a direct attack on families, workers, and the most vulnerable Americans.
